… this morning I received a friend request and it was deleted… I didn’t recognize the name … later this afternoon I received it again… along with a private message… she told me she had heard I was writing a book about life in a small town… someone had shared some of my random stories with her and a she wrote “I was in a relationship with someone years ago and he told me a story about him and your father, I am embarrassed to ask but curious if it is in your book?”
… my first thought process was “What to heck?”… I almost pee’ed my pants when checked out her profile… we have a mutual friend and he and I had recently had a conversation about my manuscript… I have never met her, but I replied with the previous message “yes maam… I know your friend” and the entire story. (Big Smile)
(Below is the story she was referring to… it is not from my manuscript… because the book will name “names” (Bigger Smile)
… it was the winter of 1976 … Daddy’s Texaco service station had been broken into 2 nights in a row… each night the only thing taken was a carton of cigarettes and half a box of butterfingers… but before exiting they would light the old propane heater and when Daddy arrived at 5am it was warm and toasty… The next few nights Daddy sat in the dark in hopes the person would return… and the next weekend he did!!
… Daddy said he simply waited… when he seen that he taken what he wanted and had lit the heater… Daddy spoke from the dark hallway and said “Son, you mind making coffee too?”
… this young man (15 years old) told me later that he and Daddy sat in those old raggedy recliners in front of the fire and talked for what seemed forever ( I remember his talks well… I would rather taken a spanking)… it was raining and even though he lived very close Daddy loaded him up in his old 63 Chevrolet drove him next door… he sat in his driveway until he was safely in the house… nothing was ever said to his parents… but every payday when his mother would pay their bill Daddy would send a “Butterfinger” home with her… with instructions to give to her son and that it was from Mr. Zeke.
… as a kid, I always wondered why Daddy didn’t tell on him… but as an adult I understand… we all make mistakes and sometime your life can be ruined by them… but sometimes we may be lucky enough to have someone that not only can see the GOOD in you but BELIEVES in you as well!! Big Hugs
